Best Omakase in Taipei | 利休日本料理

The most worth-your-money Omakase in Taipei, Taiwan

1800NTD, or $56 USD, is all it costs for this sit-down omakase in Taipei. As a seasoned sushi diner in Taiwan, it’s rare to find places that still offer sets for less than 2000-3000 NTD. We ate at 利休日本料理 (LiXiu Sushi Shabu Shabu) August 2024, and were blown away by the quality, quantity, freshness, sauce, presentation, and service. For 14 courses, you’re going to be satisfied no matter what.

Starters

In the best way possible, I love textury foods, especially ones that lean more slimy. So when this seaweed came out I knew I was in the right place. Flavored with the perfect amount of acidity to help prepare your palate for what’s to come. The next starter featured another acidic jelly on top of fresh slices of sashimi.

1 out of the 14 dishes we would get tonight.

Madai (red seabream) with scallion, and flounder (it would have been Shrimp but I replaced it because I’m allergic).

A lovely steamed egg pudding with seaweed and juicy clams

This was a seaweed, steamed egg, with juicy clams.

The scallop was one of my favorites, sweet, beautifully cut, with a touch of herbs from the dried seaweed.

Nigiri round 2: we’re up to 4 pieces of Nigiri, and our 5th plate. Here we had a beautifully cut scallop with dry seaweed on top.

This was a surprise mid-meal dish. We thought it might have been a dessert. Fried mochi-like bites.

A generous plate of nigiri from mackerel, tuna, to flounder.

Mackerel with freshly ground ginger, tuna belly, and flounder with shallots.

A highlight of the meal! A tofu made from cashew.

This was probably the best of the meal for me (the fish were all incredible, but this was unique). A homemade tofu made out of cashew paste. Super silky, with a creamy nutty texture.

A fried eel.

Now for the fried dish. A crispy Tempura eel. I wasn’t a huge fan, but I was glad to have eel on the menu.

A bowl of ikura with a bite of rice.

We’re already 10 dishes in, and we still haven’t reached the mains. We were already full but loved the surprises of each dish. Here we have ikura with a dollop of rice, flowers, and wasabi.

A beautiful piece of tuna nigiri.

This nigiri was served solo, as a beautiful piece of toro tuna.

Uni handroll!

Now for the dish that most people come to omakase for. The beautiful and thick Uni handroll. We had a friend that was too full to eat more, but we said this was the one dish she had to have a bite of. until…

After trying their wagyu bowl, we would have to come back for their shabu some time.

They brought out a bowl of wagyu shabu, golden egg yolk, and rice. Now this was something you definitely had to have a bite of!

A light dessert to end the intense 14-course omakase meal.

Although I was full to the brim (or should I say bream?), I finished off the homemade pudding, a light and slightly sweet dessert to help close off the meal.

LiXiu Sushi and Shabu Shabu is a great place for friends, or a date.

利休日本料理 (LiXiu Sushi Shabu Shabu) is an unsuspecting omakase restaurant, but undoubtedly one of the best I’ve been to so far for the price!
