Pingxi Crags and Shenkeng Old Street [平溪小三尖, 深坑老街]

A short, fun hike close to Taipei and eating Stinky Tofu in Shenkeng Old Street.

Pingxi Crags is a fun afternoon hike. Hope you’re not scared of heights!

Pingxi Crags is an easy-to-get-to hike from Taipei city. You can get there by car and park right by the hikes, or the train takes you just a short walk away from the trailhead.

The whole hike takes a little over 1 hour, but it’s a great place for taking photos and videos, so you may take longer. If you’re scared of heights, going up the multiple steep ladders may take some time too. I recommend going on a dry day as any amount of drizzle makes the hike slippery and much more difficult.

Lots of climbing on rocky stairs and using the ropes to balance
You can see the first peak in the center of the image. If zoomed in you’ll see two aunties who helped us find a path waving to us! (On youtube)

Hiking in Pingxi requires a lot of looping around or retracing, as its 3 peaks are separated from each other although situated very close. However it makes it more fun as you get to watch other hikers on faraway peaks.

Each peak takes maybe 10 – 20 minutes, so you can rest once you’re up. We decided to have our snack break on the 2nd peak.

Taken on Insta360.

Shenkeng Old Street 深坑老街

Shenkeng Old Street is a great place for food
We had so much stinky tofu throughout the street. Highly recommend coming here and trying out all the different stalls.

Another great thing about the Pingxi Crags is you get to eat in the old towns afterwards! We ended up driving a little closer to Taiwan to Shenkeng Old Street (深坑老街) to eat plenty of stinky tofu.

Barbequed chicken tail (or chicken butt) is a guilty pleasure.
