Grun Cafe (グリュン): Plants and Smoothie Bowls in Kashiwa Japan

I got the nuts acai bowl and a hot coffee. I worked from here for about 2 hours. It was relaxing and fulfilling.

The Grun Kashiwa cafe (グリュン) is not the kind of place you stumble into. You take the Tsukuba Express to Kashiwanoha-Campus, walk out into a planned smart city campus that feels more like a university precinct than a neighbourhood, and you find a doorway that opens into two floors of jungle. Plants everywhere. Trailing vines on shelves, potted greens on every surface, light filtering through leaves.

Restaurant: Grün (グリュン)
Location: Kashiwanoha Campus, Kashiwa, Chiba
Cuisine: smoothies, juice bar, and lunch foods.
Price range: ¥650–¥1,839 per person (~$4–$12 USD)
Known for: A menu with fresh cold-pressed juices, smoothie bowls, and a two-floor botanical interior that’s unlike anything else in the area.

Inside the Grün Kashiwa Cafe

The two-floor layout works better than you’d expect. Downstairs has the ordering counter and most of the seating, and you can watch the smoothies being made from the bar. Upstairs is quieter, more airy. The stairway is wrapped in vines and is an experience just to walk up it. I decided to sit downstairs amongst the plants.

The free-serve cucumber and apple water is a small thing that sets the tone for the whole visit: thoughtful, plant-forward, not trying to upsell you on anything.

The Food and Drinks

I ordered the nuts bowl which was topped with all types of nuts and seeds, like an acai bowl. I’m not too sure what fruits they used in the blend, but on top you get slices of bananas.

I also ordered a hot coffee, a little sad they didn’t have oatmilk or soymilk for lattes. If I could I would order more smoothies and juices, but the bowl and coffee was enough for breakfast. There’s also a matcha protein smoothie which sounds incredible.

If you’re vegetarian and traveling in Japan, you know how rare it is to find a spot where the whole menu is options, not just one or two items tucked at the bottom. There is a generous array of vegetarian and plant-based food, including vegan cakes and donuts if you’re after something sweet to finish.

Getting There and Making a Day of It

I took the JR and JJ line, with a Klook pass, much easier to use a constant pass instead of figuring out each ride’s ticket price in a crowded station.

Grün is about an 8-minute walk from Kashiwanoha-Campus Station on the Tsukuba Express, which puts it roughly 30 minutes from Akihabara. No crowds on a weekday afternoon, no queue. The station area itself is worth a small wander: it’s a modern smart city campus, more spread out and planned than the older parts of Chiba, and Tsutaya Books Kashiwanoha is five minutes away if you want to pair the trip with a bookshop visit.

Is It Worth Going?

If you eat everything, the menu might feel narrow. But if you’re vegetarian, vegan, or just tired of the same options on repeat, Grün is the perfect place. Who hasn’t dreamed of a plant shop x cafe. There’s almost nothing in English written about this place, which usually means you’re getting in before it’s crowded or obvious. There’s a Klook
